10th AbioCor artificial heart implanted in Texas.

Surgeons at the Texas Heart Institute have implanted the 10th patient with a self-contained artificial heart. O.H. "Bud" Frazier, chief of cardiopulmonary transplantation at the Institute performed the operation on February 24th.

Six grapefruit-sized AbioCor devices, produced by Abiomed, Inc., were implanted in 2001, one in 2002 and 3 thus far in 2003. The 7 patients who received implants in 2001 and 2002 have died.

The longest-living AbioCor implant recipient was Tom Christerson, who died last month after surviving 512 days with the device.
