10TH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK TELETHON TO AIR ON CABLE

10TH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK TELETHON TO AIR ON CABLE
TRENTON, N.J., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside and Children's Hospital of New Jersey in Newark will benefit from the world's largest television fundraiser as it participates in the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Telethon, broadcast live from Disneyland, May 30-31. The international fundraiser benefits five million children treated every year at 160 hospitals for children throughout North America.
The Cable Television Network of New Jersey (CTN) will air the telethon live starting Saturday, May 30, at 9 p.m., through Sunday, May 31. Check local listings for the CTN channel in the area. Local portions of the telethon will be hosted by Molly Barber and Johnathan B. Bell.
A special feature of this year's show will be a reunion of the "miracle children" from each of the past years. The children will help celebrate CMN's 10th anniversary by returning to share their inspiring stories and report on the progress since receiving care at a Children's Miracle Network (CMN) hospital. "Miracle child" is a term used to describe children who have faced incredible odds, often life or death situations, and survived to live happy, healthy lives.
The telethon will also feature exciting new programming, including "Sports Dream '92" and the "National Parenting Poll." "Sports Dreams" involves the sale of sports memorabilia and sports fantasy items as well as other fundraising activities, and is sponsored by Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites. The "National Parenting Poll," sponsored in part by Eckerd Drug Stores, was developed by CMN to focus on parenting skills and current theories of raising children. It provides a forum to compare ideas and opinions with those of other parents and to those of an expert panel.
Many television, recording and sports celebrities will also contribute to the show. Some of the CMN stars to appear include Bob Hope, Bo Jackson, Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Merlin Olsen, Marilyn McCoo, Rich Little, Miss America, Kenny Loggins, Reba McEntire and Bill Cosby. All celebrities donate their time and talent to the cause.
Children's Miracle Network is unique among national charities because 100 percent of local telethon donations stay in the community to benefit the participating CMN hospitals. Last year, CMN helped raise more than $100 million, bringing total donations to nearly half a billion since the first CMN telethon aired in 1983. Children's Specialized Hospital and Children's Hospital of New Jersey have participated since 1984 and received $270,000 from last year's efforts to help provide health care for its patients.
Children's Hospital of New Jersey in Newark is a 200-bed facility that specializes in treating children of all afflictions, including cancer, birth defects, accidents and muscular and cardiovascular diseases. Children's Specialized Hospital specializes in comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation care for children with both inpatient and outpatient needs.
Both hospitals pride themselves on treating the whole child, while filling the needs of parents and families. The hospitals associated with CMN represent the premier pediatric health-care facilities in their respective communities.
CTN is a service of the New Jersey Cable Operators.
