1000TH AIRBUS AIRCRAFT ENTERS SERVICE MARCH 29

HERNDON, Va., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Airbus Industrie has delivered its 1,000th aircraft. The Air France A340-300, the carrier's first of the type, will enter service March 29.
The first Airbus aircraft -- an A300 -- was also delivered to Air France, in May 1974. Fifteen years later, in June 1989, Airbus Industries delivered its 500th aircraft, an A320 to Northwest Airlines. Less than four years later Airbus Industrie has delivered another 500 aircraft.
The A340, the first of an order for 14 placed by the Air France Group, will enter service on the French carrier's route from Paris to Washington Dulles International Airport March 29. With the delivery of subsequent aircraft, Air France will expand its A340 services to other destinations in North, Central and South America, as well as to Tahiti via Los Angeles.
The A340 is an ultra-long range, four-engine widebody aircraft. To date, 112 A340s have been ordered by 19 customers worldwide.
Airbus Industrie is a consortium of European aerospace firms comprised of Aerospatiale of France, Deutsche Aerospace Airbus of Germany, British Aerospace of the United Kingdom and CASA of Spain. The consortium produces a family of commercial jet aircraft ranging in size from the 150-seat single-aisle A320 to the 335-seat twin- aisle A330.
