100 shunts on the M50.
THERE have been 100 accidents on the M50 during the first month of roadworks to upgrade it.
The figure released yesterday comes a week after the motorway was blocked for eight hours -because of repair works on a pipe.
And Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell warned drivers face even worse chaos for up to 10 years as the road is dug up for metros, Luas lines and more improvements.
She said the Garda Reserve might need to be diverted to "act as a rapid reaction force" on Ireland's busiest road.
Deputy Mitchell added last week's gridlock showed the Garda Traffic Corps was "woefully under-resourced" with just 48 officers on motorbikes.
And she said the fact that a simple pipe repair could bring traffic to a halt was "a wake-up call that Dublin needs a radical overhaul of traffic management".
Ms Mitchell added: "Many of our roads are permanently on the verge of gridlock and it takes only a puncture, a knocked-over cone or a broken light to cause chaos."
