Byline: RYAN PARRY

RIOTERS who plunged Belfast into chaos were deliberately targeting police officers, it was claimed yesterday.

RUC Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan slammed rival nationalist and loyalist factions for targeting police in gun and bomb attacks.

A third night of brutal street violence in North Belfast left almost 100 officers injured yesterday.

Mr Flanagan said: "My officers are being targeted for murder in these gun and bomb attacks.

"The violence happened in an area where Catholics and Protestants live in close proximity and which has a history of sectarian tension.
