100,000TH DODGE RAM CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL ROLLS OFF LINE
AT CHRYSLER'S DODGE CITY ASSEMBLY PLANT
WARREN, Mich., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The 100,000th Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel rolled off the final assembly line to the cheers of Dodge City Assembly Plant workers with Chrysler President Robert A. Lutz behind the wheel and Cummins Engine President James A. Henderson his smiling passenger.
The vehicle, a black and silver Dodge Ram W250 Super LE Cummins Turbo Diesel, symbolizes the runaway success of Dodge in the diesel pickup market. The Dodge Ram Cummins Diesels, introduced just three years ago, now hold more than 30 percent of their market segment.
"I've always liked trucks," said Lutz. "With 400 foot pounds of torque, the Ram Cummins Diesel is almost as much fun to drive as a couple of my other favorite Dodges -- my personal 1978 Dodge Li'l Red Truck and the incredible new Viper."
The Dodge City Assembly Plant, in addition to the Ram Diesel, builds the gasoline-powered full-size Ram pickup, the mid-size Dakota pickup and full-size cab and chassis trucks. The 3,300 employees at the plant are heavily involved in Product Quality Improvement through the joint United Auto Workers/Chrysler team concept.
"The year it was introduced, the Cummins-powered Dodge Ram moved into a leading position among diesel-powered pickup trucks," said Henderson. "We're very excited and pleased that demand for this winning combination continues to grow."
The 6-cylinder Cummins engine used in the truck displaces 5.9 liters and produces 160 horsepower and 400 foot pounds of torque. The engine features charge-air cooling, a turbocharger and direct injection. The 1992 models are available in a Club Cab configuration for the first time. With a maximum gross combined weight rating of 17,000 pounds, the Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel has a best-in-class 11,900-pound tow rating.
