1,000th cherry tree planted to commemorate Vienna's founding.

VIENNA, April 30 Kyodo

A ceremony was held Tuesday to mark the planting of the last cherry tree of the 1,000 Japan presented to Vienna in 1996 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the Austrian capital.

Vienna's sister cities in Japan and various goodwill groups presented the cherry trees to Vienna, of which 999 had already been planted. Tuesday's ceremony was held on an island in the Danube River in northern Vienna.

Over five years, 850 cherry trees had been planted at hospitals, schools and other areas, according to organizers.

The remaining 149 had been planted on the artificial island, as visible signs of the two nations' friendship, the organizers said.

Japanese artist Masahiro Moriguchi and his wife, Fumiyo, attended the ceremony. The couple, with the Vienna city government, are helping to create recreational spaces alongside rows of cherry trees with stone sculptures and had so far donated 100 such sculptures.

City officials, Japanese students and Japanese embassy officials there also attended the ceremony.
