1,000 PRIMARY DROP-OUTS A YEAR.

Byline: DARA deFAOITE

MORE than 1,000 primary schoolchildren drop out of the education system every year, it has been claimed.

Child support group Barnardos said thousands of children were being "scarred for life every year by educational disadvantage". Liz Leonard, of Barnardos, added: "1,000 children fail to transfer from primary to secondary school annually.

"These children are not counted on the official figures for early school leavers."

Barnardos also claim that as many as 13,000 young people leave school before completing the Leaving Cert each year.

Ms Leonard said: "Research shows many children who leave school early fare badly later in life." She added that early school leavers are "at greater risk of addiction and involvement in crime".
