1% increase in textile-clothing sector's exports generates 40,000 jobs, says FTTH president.

(TAP) -- The Tunisian Textile and Clothing Federation (FTTH) seeks to increase exports of the textile-clothing sector to the European market by 4.5% against 2% in 2016, FTTH President Hosni Boufaden said.

"The 1% increase in exports of the textile-clothing sector to the European market helps create 40 thousand jobs and the return to an export rate of 4.5% will help generate 100 thousand new jobs," he pointed out at a press conference held on Thursday by the FTTH to present the federation's future strategy.

He highlighted the importance of the textile-clothing sector's role in the national economy as it employs some 170 thousand individuals despite the closure of 400 companies.

He further pointed out its ability to progress and develop if favourable conditions are met.

The federation has implemented an action plan mainly based on boosting exports, supporting businesses by opening new credit lines in collaboration with all stakeholders (government, the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts and the Tunisian General Labour Union) and rationalising imports by checking customs declarations, he indicated.

This strategy aims to prepare an estimate table of the cost of raw materials, generate extra tax revenues for the State and help exporting companies to access the domestic market.
