.22 Long rifle barrel life.

Q My wife and I recently gave my son a new Ruger 77/22 bolt-action rifle which he has enjoyed shooting. He recently asked me how long the barrel would last and I frankly have no idea. How long should it last? How many cartridges can he expect to fire before he wears out the barrel?

A Tell your son he should not worry about shooting out his barrel. I have worked with many .22 rifles that have had far in excess of 100,000 rounds fired through them, and they still produced exceptional accuracy. With the use of up-to-date steel alloys and noncorrosive ammo, it is almost impossible to shoot out or wear out a modern .22 rimfire barrel. Barring any accidents he should look forward to passing on that 77/22 to his son or grandson.
