Republic Steel, a provider of special bar quality steel, has started hot commissioning of its new electric arc furnace in Lorain.

The company will cast initial heats into six-inch by six-inch billets and then they will be rolled on the 9/10-inch rolling mill at the Lorain plant.

Production on the billet caster is likely to increase over the next several months, with bloom cast production starting in February 2014. The USD85m capital project is intended to provide more than one million tons of steel per annum for the production of bloom and billet cast semi-finished, bar and coil products. The company says that it will create around 450 full-time jobs over the next several years, bringing more than USD1bn in annual economic activity to Ohio
