-GM Helps Sponsor Achilles Freedom Team at Detroit Marathon; Sixteen wounded veterans from across the U.S. to compete in Sunday's 26.2-mile event.
ENP Newswire - 22 October 2012
Release date- 19102012 - DETROIT - With support from GM, Chevrolet and the GM Military Discount Program, 16 members of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans will participate in Sunday's 35th annual Detroit Free Press / Talmer Bank Marathon.
The team represents 13 states, including Michigan. This is the Achilles Freedom Team's second Detroit Marathon; athletes participated for the first time in 2011, and their accomplishments were documented in a video later aired at the 112th Army-Navy Game - of which Chevrolet is a sponsor - and in a Chevrolet TV commercial.
'Our support for the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans is just one of the many ways we salute the heroes who have bravely served our country and overcome life-altering injuries as they begin a new phase in their lives,' said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet global marketing.
Perry added Chevrolet will have more news to announce regarding its support of the Achilles Freedom Team athletes later this year.
GM and the GM Military Discount Program began their affiliation with the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded in Veterans in 2010. The team was formed in 2004 by Achilles International to help wounded veterans from all service branches overcome injuries sustained as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - including amputations and paralysis - and rebuild their lives though athletics.
Achilles officials generally visit with wounded service members as they recuperate in military hospitals, where they have the option to learn to use specialized adaptive devices, such as hand cycles, for competitions.
The three-wheeled hand cycles allow riders to lean forward while pumping the wheels with their hands, a better solution for racing than a traditional wheelchair.
'Our team members are looking forward to competing in Detroit, and are grateful for the support they receive from GM's Military Discount team and Chevrolet in making their visit possible,' said Genna Griffith, the team's executive director.
Earlier this year, Chevrolet auctioned a special 'Military Tribute' Chevrolet Camaro at Barrett Jackson and donated the $185,000 proceeds to the Achilles Freedom Team. In 2011, GM donated 30 hand cycles to the team and in 2010, Chevrolet donated a Silverado HD pickup truck to the team for transporting hand cycles.
