Ethernet switching technology provider Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR) said it has joined as a sponsor company of US Ignite, a US based public-private partnership launched at the White House earlier this year.

The mission of US Ignite is to catalyze highly advanced applications that leverage next-generation Internet networks or "gigabit networks" to dramatically improve how Americans work in and experience education, advanced manufacturing, transportation, public safety, clean energy, and healthcare.

Responsibilities of the US Ignite Partnership include connecting, convening, and supporting startups, local and state government, universities, industry leaders, federal agencies, foundations, and community and carrier initiatives in conceptualizing and building new applications.

The advanced technologies that will power the US Ignite initiative have been developed through the National Science Foundation's GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovation) program and by US Ignite's commercial partners. Extreme Networks specializes in high capacity, low latency Ethernet switches, SDN and open software that delivers rich media, mobile convergence and the high bandwidth required for business, government and education.

The US Ignite partnership was formed with leadership from the National Science Foundation in response to the Administration's call to ensure all Americans have access to the information and tools necessary to thrive in a 21st-century economy.
