Global Banking News - 24 January 2011

The European Central Bank (ECB) has hinted that it could increase its reference rates in order to control inflation.

The central bank said that interest rates could be hiked even though some nations in the euro zone have not completely recovered from the financial crisis.

Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, said in an interview that inflation pressures in the euro zone need to be under constant monitoring. He asked central banks around the world to ensure that higher energy and food prices do not affect the global economy.
