17 October 2011 - UK-based lender Barclays (LON:BARC) is eyeing four Spanish small savings banks, or cajas, in a bid to expand its presence in the country, according to a Sunday Telegraph report.

The newspaper reported that Barclays (LON:BARC) was among the eight bidders that have submitted first-round offers for Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo. The bank was also looking at three other cajas, including Novacaixagalicia, the report said.

The Telegraph added that the UK group could decide to exit the Spanish market if it fails to gain momentum in the country.

The newspaper did not cite any sources and Barclays did not comment for Reuters.
