BARNETT TO SET UP 'TENT BANKS'
MIAMI, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett will open seven "tent bank" locations in the hardest-hit part of south Dade County at the request Friday of Gov. Lawton Chiles.
They will provide basic check cashing services for the general public beginning Monday, from 9 a.m. until curfew.
"The governor asked and we agreed to staff sites in tents and other temporary locations under National Guard and police security beginning Monday," said Allen Lastinger, Barnett's president and chief operating officer.
The tent locations will be in Homestead, Florida City, Cutler Ridge, Perrine, West Perrine, East Perrine and Richmond Heights.
The "tent banks" will offer basic check-cashing service for all types of government checks, insurance checks under $5,000 and personal checks up to $25.
Work will be recorded manually and transported each night to a processing center for regular transaction accounting.
The governor's office pledged assistance with security, transportation and temporary sites if Barnett would staff the temporary banking facilities.
