E! ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION TO DEVELOP PROGRAMMING
WITH LOS ANGELES CHAPTER OF NOW
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- E! Entertainment Television and the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) have reached an agreement to develop programming addressing a wide variety of women's issues as they relate to entertainment, it was announced today by Lee Masters, president and chief executive officer of E! Entertainment Television and Tammy Bruce, president of the Los Angeles chapter of NOW. The announcement was made at the E! studios in Los Angeles.
The discussion between the two organizations began when Los Angeles NOW expressed concern and a possible boycott effort in response to E!'s hiring of Howard Stern. E! responded to LA NOW's request for a dialogue on the issue, which resulted in this programming agreement.
"We're dedicated to supporting women as evidenced by a senior management team at E ! that's 57 percent female," said Masters. "Developing programming about women's issues is a logical extension of our corporate philosophy, and a move we're proud to announce at this time.
"We believe in diversity not only in the workplace, but in programming as well," Masters added. "We want to work in concert with the LA chapter of NOW and are having ongoing discussions about the many women's issues that we jointly support."
Said Bruce: "One of our primary concerns as advocates for women is the image of women in media and the messages about women that the media perpetuates. Although we remain concerned about Howard Stern, the development of feminist issue-based programming at E! not only allows an opportunity to balance the medium's message but also will provide an extraordinary foundation for education on women's issues in the entertainment industry.
"We trust that E!'s commitment to being a woman-friendly network is sincere, and we look forward to helping them maintain that reputation through this type of programming effort," concluded Bruce.
