UNIVERSAL FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT & MCA HOME VIDEO SIGN AWARD-WINNING
PRODUCER/ACTRESS SHELLEY DUVALL TO THREE-YEAR PRODUCTION DEAL
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Family Entertainment and MCA Home Video have signed actress and children's programming pioneer Shelley Duvall to a three-year "first look" production deal, it was announced by Jeff Segal, president, Universal Family Entertainment/Cartoon Studios and Robert Blattner, president, MCA Home Video.
The pact calls for Duvall to product live-action and animated programming under the banner of her production company, Think Entertainment, with Universal Family Entertainment and MCA Universal Home Video. Already in development is a live-action series based on Betty MacDonald's classic character, "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle."
"Shelley Duvall is one of the most creative and respected names in family entertainment," said Segal. "Innovation and high quality are the two principals that have been an integral part of all of her endeavors, beginning with 'Faerie Tale Theatre,' which set the standard for this type of programming. We will continue with Shelley to be guided by these principals. We are proud and excited to have her as a part of our family."
Blattner commented, "Shelley Duvall has an unsurpassed ability to capture the imagination of children, as well as adults through her various projects. She has also captured ours. We look forward to a long and successful association."
"For me, Universal is a huge playground," said Duvall. "I'm thrilled to be here -- to have Universal's support. By pooling our resources, there are a lot of good things we can do together. I look forward to working with Jeff, Rob and everyone at MCA/Universal to make some magic."
Duvall currently services as executive producer and on-air host of the critically acclaimed "Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories." The new half-hour animated series, which premiered in April on Showtime, is produced by Think Entertainment in association with Universal Family Entertainment. The six half-hour specials feature Duvall introducing animated versions of classic children's bedtime stories narrated by celebrities including Martin Short, Jean Stapleton, Sissy Spacek, Rick Moranis, Bonnie Raitt, Michael J. Fox, John Candy, James Earl Jones, Bette Midler, Dudley Moore, Christian Slater and Ringo Starr. It was recently announced that the first three programs will be released on video cassettes by MCA Universal Home Video on Aug. 20. The first three programs, featuring two stories each, are: "Weird Parents" and "Elbert's Bad Word"; "Elizabeth and Larry" and "Bill and Pete"; and "Little Toot and the Loch Ness Monster" and "Choo Choo."
Distinguished for her work as an actress, producer and businesswoman, Duvall has been heralded as a pioneer for her work in the area of children's programming. Duvall's Think Entertainment develops and produces high quality original programming for all media. She has received numerous honors for her work on the landmark cable series "Faerie Tale Theatre," including the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, seven ACE Awards and the first Golden ACE Award for its contributions to the cable television industry. "Shelley Duvall's Tall Tales and Legends," has received two ACE Awards for outstanding children's programming.
