COLUMBIA SAYS 'GO' TO FIRST-RUN 'BEAKMAN'S WORLD'
SEATTLE, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Pictures Television Distribution has given a firm production commitment to "Beakman's World," an innovative weekly, half-hour series for children and young adults based on the Universal Press Syndicate comic strip "You Can with Beakman," it was confirmed today by Barry Thurston, president, Columbia Pictures Television Distribution (CPTD).
A Fall 1992 launch is scheduled for the fast-paced, entertaining education series, which is a joint enterprise of Columbia Pictures Television Distribution, Columbia Pictures Television (CPT) and i?versal Belo Productions. Universal Belo is a joint venture of A.H. Belo Corporation, a publicly held television broadcasting and newspaper publishing company, and Universal Press Syndicate, the largest independent newspaper syndicate in the country.
Since announcing the program at NATPE, CPTD has assembled a top- of-the-line station roster featuring Belo's five network affiliates and stations from the Tribune, ABC owned-and-operated, Group W, Gannett, Post-Newsweek, Times-Mirror and Scripps-Howard groups.
Overall, "Beakman" is cleared in 94 percent of the country on 170 stations (including all of the top 30 markets). Outlets include WWOR/New York (independent), KTLA/Los Angeles (independent), WLS/Chicago (ABC), KYW/Philadelphia (NBC), KPIX/San Francisco (CBS), WHDH/Boston (CBS), WFAA/Dallas (ABC), WXYZ/Detroit (ABC), KHOU/Houston (CBS), WXIA/Atlanta (NBC) and WJW/Cleveland (CBS).
Starring award-winning performance artist and comedy writer Paul Zaloom, "Beakman's World" empowers young audiences with knowledge and understanding of how the world works in an upbeat and contemporary manner.
Inspired by queries from the home audience, questions such as "Why is the sky blue?" "What makes the wind blow?" "Why does it rain?" and "What is gravity?" are answered using state-of-the-art visuals and cutting-edge humor designed to make learning fun.
"'Beakman's World' is an ideal association for advertisers and stations," says Thurston. "It is an entertaining product which emphatically demonstrates stations' commitment towards social responsibility and education in America."
"'Beakman' is a dynamic blend of entertainment and education presented in a stylish and upbeat format," says CPT President Scott Siegler. "Music, special effects and Paul Zaloom's unique brand of comic energy are all integrated into a series that will appeal to viewers across the age spectrum."
In support of the series, CPTD is developing a nationwide public relations campaign designed to incorporate "Beakman's World" into national science contests and the curricula of schools as well as PSAs for drug abuse, environmental issues and education.
CPTD will also supply stations with 10- and 15-second educational vignettes, starring "Beakman," which stations can broadcast throughout their programming schedule and use as a packaging vehicle for sponsors.
Emmy Award-winning producer/director/writer Mark Waxman will executive produce "Beakman's World." As an executive producer, his credits include the CBS series "Peaceable Kingdom," "Dads," "Stir Crazy" and the recent NBC telefilm "Revolver," as well as the acclaimed PBS series "Film Odyssey," "Academy Leaders" and "Michael Jackson." He is also former vice president of children's programs for CBS.
Bob Heath, who produced and directed the Disney Channel's "The Art of Disney Animation" and "The Making of the Little Mermaid" will serve as producer.
The comic strip "You Can with Beakman," created by Jok Church, appears in more than 100 newspapers across the United States after less than one year in syndication. Church will be creatively involved in the series.
Columbia is offering "Beakman's World" on an all-barter basis. Group W Television Advertising is handling the barter sales.
