'FIRST LOOK' PRODUCING/DIRECTING DEAL WITH FILMMAKER RIDLEY SCOTT
HOLLYWOOD, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Paramount Pictures announced today that it has entered into a "first look" producing/directing deal with renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott under which Paramount will have the first opportunity to develop, produce and distribute his company's future motion pictures.
Scott is currently completing work on "1492: The Conquest of Paradise," an epic film about the voyages of Christopher Columbus starring Gerard Depardieu that Paramount plans to release next October.
"From 'Alien' to 'Thelma & Louise' to his upcoming epic '1492,' Ridley Scott is rightfully in that select circle of visionary filmmakers," said Brandon Tartikoff, chairman of Paramount Pictures. "His incredible eye and distinctive taste have all of us at Paramount excited at the prospect of developing projects with Ridley that he will direct and/or produce."
Scott's Percy Main Productions, led by Executive Vice President and Producer Mimi Polk Sotela, will offer Paramount the first look at all its upcoming motion picture projects, and Paramount will then have the right to develop, produce and distribute those films it selects.
Already in development are three projects to be produced by Percy Main Productions and two more which Scott may direct.
One of the world's most visually sophisticated filmmakers, Scott has directed such acclaimed films as "Alien," "Blade Runner," "Black Rain" and "Thelma & Louise."
"Alien" (1979) was a futuristic horror film about a monster loose aboard a spaceship. A huge box-office hit, the film launched Sigourney Weaver's film career, won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and was followed by two sequels.
"Blade Runner" (1982) starred Harrison Ford as an ex-cop hired to track and kill four rebellious androids. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the film has long been celebrated for its spectacular and imaginative production design. It is in the Library of Congress and has inspired many subsequent science fiction films.
"Black Rain" (1989) starred Michael Douglas as a New York detective in Osaka, Japan, trying to recapture a brutal killer.
Percy Main's "Thelma & Louise" (1991) was one of his most highly praised and talked-about films, garnering six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director for Scott. It won the award for Best Original Screenplay by Callie Khouri. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis starred as two friends whose weekend road trip is dramatically changed when an unexpected incident turns them into fugitives from the law.
Scheduled for release by Paramount to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage, "1492: The Conquest of Paradise" tells the sweeping and provocative tale of one of history's most celebrated but mysterious figures. Co-starring with Depardieu are Armand Assante and Weaver as Queen Isabella.
