When Buccini/Pollin Group Inc. co-founder Dave Pollin expanded Canopy by Hilton to the West Coast, he selected his hometown of Portland as its newest destination. The 10-story Canopy by Hilton Portland offers 153 rooms in the heart of a revitalized industrial zone in the Pearl District.

Extensive interior planning and partnerships with the community highlight the property's commitment to the surrounding economy. In the hotel lobby, visitors have a chance to buy locally crafted goods. The public areas feature commissioned art that acts as an extension of nearby galleries. In the hotel caf, patio doors connect guests with the neighborhood and offer pedestrians views into the building.

The 100,000-square-foot hotel is designed as a bridge between old and new structures, with the exterior materials complementing the district's freight and warehouse past to ensure a blended neighborhood feel.

Careful planning pulled activity from the street deeper into the hotel to enliven spaces that are traditionally underutilized. A double-height winter garden deep inside the quarter-block site serves to engage and illuminate the entire property. Situated at the back of the hotel, the garden offers skylights and greenery and allows daylight to stream through the main floor caf and bar.

The project team collaborated to provide as many value-engineering options as possible while maintaining the design intent, working through multiple weeks of snow and ice to accelerate phasing and recover lost time. The design and construction process delivered on a luxury feel while working within a limited scope of budget in an escalating construction market.
