(EDU) TURKISH CYPRIOT PRESIDENT OPENS GIRNE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY'S CAMPUS IN CANTERBURY.

CANTERBURY, Dec 6, 2009 (TUR) -- President Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) inaugurated Girne American University's campus in Canterbury, Britain.

Canterbury city takes place in Kent region which is nearly 200 kilometers away from London, and is famous with its historical cathedral.

Talat said that universities had always had a special importance for TRNC.

He said, "universities are among the limited number of tools which we use in a small country like TRNC --under isolations-- to develop communication with the rest of the world and to support our economy."

Talat said that Girne American University was the first private university in high education in TRNC.

Noting that there were currently six universities in TRNC, Talat said that nearly 40,000 students from over 90 countries were studying in these universities.

Girne American University's Canterbury campus has business administration, information technologies, law and tourism departments.
