(ECO) GIANTS OF AVIATION SECTOR MEET IN ISTANBUL.
A seminar on "Single European Air Space" and within the frame of SESAR began in north-western province of Istanbul on Wednesday. The seminar is being hosted by the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation and is being attended by representatives from Europe's most biggest aviation companies.
Delivering the opening remarks of the seminar, Ariduru said that the Turkish aviation sector continued to grow in 2010 despite a slow down in other countries across the globe.
We pay high attention to seminars to determine the road map to be followed by the aviation sector, Ariduru underlined.
SESAR is one of the greatest projects of the century to shape the future of air traffic management and to develop the technological infrastructure, Ariduru stressed.
Around 20,000 airplanes either land or depart in European air space on a daily basis. We have to establish new air corridors and reduce the economic loss of airline companies, Ariduru said.
The Executive Director of the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), Patrick Ky, said that air traffic in Europe grew constantly.
In 2030, the air traffic in Europe would double. The system must definitely be developed, Ky stressed.
With the SESAR project, we intend to manage air traffic easily, increase flight security and bring down costs, Ky said.
The SESAR project (formerly known as SESAME) is the European air traffic control infrastructure modernization programme. SESAR aims at developing the new generation air traffic management system capable of ensuring the safety and fluidity of air transport worldwide over the next 30 years.
-A THREE PHASE PROJECT-
The first phase of SESAR, called the definition phase (2004-2008), which ended in 2008, delivered an ATM master plan defining the content, the development and deployment plans of the next generation of ATM system. This definition phase was led by Eurocontrol, and co-funded by the European Commission under the Trans-European Network Transport programme. Work was executed by a consortium made of representatives of all air transport stakeholders. Whilst most of the consortium members were European organizations, the consortium was also be opened to non-European actors.
The development phase (2008-2013) will produce the required new generation of technological systems and components as defined in the definition phase. For this phase the Commission has proposed the creation of a joint undertaking, based on the GALILEO model, which will federate public and private funds (Community, Eurocontrol, industry and third countries) and guarantee a single management structure for the project, as well as a governance model associating all actors involved (public and private).
The deployment phase (2014-2020) will seek to build the new infrastructure at a wide scale both in Europe and in partner countries. This will be carried out under the responsibility of the industry without further public funding.
The Istanbul seminar is being attended by representatives from many companies, including SELEX, INDRA, THALES, ENAV, TAI, TAV, Turkish Airlines (THY) and Celebi.
