(DIP) TURKEY'S FOREIGN MINISTERY ON AFTERSHOCKS IN CHILE.

ANKARA, Mar 13, 2010 (TUR) -- Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it was happy to learn that Thursday's aftershocks did not cause any casualties in Chile.

The Ministry said in a statement on Friday that a series of strong aftershocks from last month's devastating quake rocked Chile.

"We are happy to learn that there were no immediate reports of casualties or damages in the 7.2-magnitude aftershock," it said.

The Ministry added that the Turkish relief agency, the Red Crescent, sent humanitarian aid to quake-stricken Chile. "The aid including tents, blankets, foodstuff and a mobile kitchen was sent to Chile by two military cargo planes earlier today. The aid will be handed over to the Chilean Red Cross officials," it added

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Chile on February 27, ripping apart buildings, highways and bridges before sending waves rumbling across the Pacific Basin. Nearly 550 people died and more than 2 million people were displaced.
