`PHANTOM' FLYING, `AUSTIN' SPYING O'SEAS.

Marking a generally juicy frame, the "Star Wars" prequel became the fastest film in history to reach A$20 million ($13 million) after just 14 days in Australia (beating "Independence Day," which took 24 days). In other markets, "The Matrix," "The Mummy," "Notting Hill" and "Entrapment" filled coffers.

The omens abroad for "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" look nothing short of sensational after New Line's spoof launched Down Under June 17, pulling $697,000 on 242 screens. That's the fourth-highest opening day in the territory, behind "Phantom Menace," "Independence Day" and "Tomorrow Never Dies."

One Aussie booker described biz as "phenomenal," powered by George Lucas' epic and "Notting Hill's" preem, and he was anticipating a monster weekend as Mike Myers' romp and "10 Things I Hate About You" rolled out. "We're on the cusp of one of the biggest periods I can remember," the exhib ventured, forecasting an eventual tally well north of A$35 million ($22.7 million) for "Phantom."

"Episode 1" smashed industry records in New Zealand ($877,000 on 33, 9% ahead of previous champ "ID4") and Colombia ($368,000 in three days on 58). The pic abated by just 27% in its soph session in Oz but experienced more serious erosion in Singapore (plunging 52%, tallying $1.4 million) and Malaysia (off 47% for $971,000).

The "Star Wars" franchise never was huge in Southeast Asia, and one circuit chief in Singapore opined, "I think many fans were disappointed with the (prequel's) storyline and childishness of some characters, because expectations were so high." All told, "Menace" minted $7.2 million and its cume hit $16.5 million.

`Matrix' still magic

"The Matrix" reigned as the frame's top earner, pocketing $16 million from just 1,632 screens in 21 countries as its cume soared to $63.5 million. The sci-fier scored WB's third-highest bow ever in the U.K., behind the last two "Batman" outings.

The Keanu Reeves starrer logged on in Taiwan with $2.4 million in six days on 58, that market's third-best entry after "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" and "Armageddon." "Matrix" harvested $1 million on 50 in Argentina, $690,000 from previews in Germany (a WB record, rubbing out "Eraser") and $297,000 on 43 in Venezuela.

"The Mummy" posted an all-time three-day record in Mexico, overtaking "Titanic," and after six days had amassed $3.1 million on 315, just ahead of "Lost World" and 33% up on "Deep Impact." The Brendan Fraser vehicle fetched a dandy $329,000 on 30 in Israel and retained pole position in Germany.

"Entrapment" collared $10.1 million in 31 countries, and its cume topped $50.2 million. In product-starved Japan, "Message in a Bottle" delivered a fair $1.3 million in five days on 185; total stands at $38.4 million with dates to come in France and Germany.

"Instinct" had an unremarkable bow in South Korea, its first foreign date; a truer indication of its drawing power will emerge next month when it arrives in Germany and France.

"Cruel Intentions" had a lively debut in Brazil and was OK in Norway but unloved in Holland and South Africa. Cume is about $10 million from 16 territories.

"Star Trek: Insurrection" lifted off in Italy with $430,000 in six days on 80--enough to earn top spot in a lifeless market; cume is $43.4 million.
