`Matangbaka' prod'n down 21.5% in first quarter: report.

The production of big-eyed Scad, locally known as matangbaka, dropped by 21.5% in the first quarter compared with the same period a year ago when the region's production reached 999.75 metric tons, data from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) bared.

In the Fisheries Situation Report of PSA released on May 11, the figures declined to 788.33 metric tons as of January to March this year. But the first quarter production was still higher than the first quarter in 2016 volume of reached 393.65 metric tons.

'Big-eyed scad production declined due to decrease in number of fishing trips and unloadings due to strong winds and rough seas plus the encroachment of commercial fishing vessels in municipal waters of Davao Oriental,' PSA said.

The big waves brought by Typhoon Agaton in January, the agency added, also 'hampered fishing operations in Davao del Sur.'

Throughout the country, big-eyed scad production increased to 25,882 metric tons in the first quarter from 23,525 metric tons on the same period last year. The figures spiked by about 10% compared with the volume a year ago.

'Increases in the production of big-eyed scad were accounted to Zamboanga

Peninsula, ARMM and Bicol Region. More unloadings of commercial fishing boats in private landing centers in Zamboanga City was attributed to more fishing trips during the period,' PSA said.

Good weather conditions were also observed especially in Basilan and Sulu provinces while Masbate had an increase of the appearance of the species in the fishing ground, which attributed to the abundant catch of big-eyed scad.
