``Battlefield Earth'' Scribe Personally Accepts Razzie Award for Worst Screenplay During a Live Talk Radio Show on Comedy World.

Entertainment Editors

LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 26, 2001

In the Golden Raspberry Foundation's 21-year history of honoring the worst in filmmaking, "Showgirls" director Peter Verhoeven was previously the only recipient to ever physically accept the "Razzie Award."

That is, until Sunday, March 25, when Raspberry Foundation founder John Wilson presented the "worst screenplay" award to JD Shapiro, the good-humored original writer of "Battlefield Earth." The presentation was made live on Comedy World Radio Network's syndicated weekend talk radio show "Drastic Radio With Mark Ebner."

In an interview with Ebner, Shapiro divulged that "Battlefield Earth"'s star John Travolta called the first draft of the film "the 'Schindler's List' of science fiction." Ebner responded, "Does that mean that Travolta thought it was the feel-good movie about Man-Animals?"

The spirited banter continued until Raspberry founder Wilson presented the handmade statuette, street value $2.49, to Shapiro. Shapiro, whose credits also include the film "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," thanked the foundation and his co-writer, Corey Mandel, for keeping his name off the final credits.

Comedy World Radio Network's show "Drastic Radio With Mark Ebner" airs live on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m.-3 p.m. Pacific.
