SENIOR judge Lord McCluskey's call for under-fire Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to resign over the routine arming of police on the beat stirred things up among the Record's online readers.

Alan McClure defended the minister, writing on our Facebook page: "Most developed Western countries have police who are routinely armed, I am all for it."

But Carol Roxburgh was with the former Solicitor General.

She said: "Kenny MacAskill should resign. The man is inept and incompetent. I don't want police routinely armed on our streets."

On our website, Joe Smith wrote: "This is the problem with an overall majority - the SNP can simply do what they want and ignore opposition."

Gavin Williamson said: "A small number of police have been armed and it is operational.

"We could do without political point scoring on the issues."

Mark Pager Irvine said: "He should have left when he let Scotland down and released a mass murderer - Megrahi."
