: Mayor Beng warns trikes to stop overcharging.

In a press conference yesterday (May 22), Mayor Maria Isabelle Beng Climaco-Salazar called on tricycle drivers to stop overcharging passengers, especially tourists. The mayor has personally been made aware of complaints received by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) from tourists that trike drivers take advantage of them and overcharge their fare.

To the passengers, Mayor Beng urged them to air their complaints directly at the Tricycle Adjudication Board (TAB) at the City Hall Legal Office instead of just posting their complaints online. Meanwhile, City Legal Officer Atty. Jesus Carbon said that a proper complaint must be filed by the passenger so that the next time the driver will visit TAB, his attention will be called. He also stated that the TAB is currently undermanned, which accounts for their difficulty in monitoring in real-time the fare issue. Overcharging of fare is a violation of Zamboanga City Ordinance 186, series of 1996 which governs the operation of motorized tricycles. Penalties are specified not less than Php1,000.
