CONSUMER SPENDING BY CHECK INCREASED MARKEDLY DURING 1992 HOLIDAYS
 TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Throughout the country, consumers spent 14.4 percent more via check during the seven days before Christmas of 1992 than during the same period in 1991.
 The peak check-writing day was Saturday, Dec. 19, 1992, at 6.9 percent over the same day in 1991. Increased consumer confidence and Christmas day falling at the end of the week are contributing factors.

 Following are the results by region:

 seven-day period in 1991;
 -- Ten-state Mountain region was up 9.3 percent over the same
 seven-day period in 1991;
 -- Five-state Western region was up 8.6 percent over the same
 seven-day period in 1991;
 -- Seventeen-state Southern region was up 17.8 percent over the same
 seven-day period in 1991.
