IT'S `GO, SPEED RACER, GO' FOR FALL AT GROUP W PRODUCTIONS
LOS ANGELES, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Group W Productions has given a "Go, Speed Racer, Go" to the updated version of the legendary animated series.
"The New Adventures of Speed Racer" will premiere the week of Sept. 13, as a weekly series, Derk Zimmerman, president, Group W Productions, has announced.
Thirteen half-hour episodes have been produced by Fred Wolf Films, headed by Fred Wolf, winner of an Academy Award and producer of the hugely successful "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" television series. The "Speed Racer" shows are being produced in association with Speed Racer Enterprises, of which John Rocknowski is president.
According to Richard Sheingold, executive vice president, Group W Productions, the station lineup cleared to date exceeds 80 percent, and includes all of the top 25 markets. The list is topped by WWOR, New York; KCOP, Los Angeles; and WPWR, Chicago.
National advertising is being sold by Group W Productions Media Sales under the direction of President Dan Cosgrove.
Westinghouse Broadcasting International is selling "The New Adventures of Speed Racer" as well as the "classic" episodes to the world market.
For more than a quarter of a century, the racing series has captured the imaginations of millions of dedicated fans. Interest has surged in recent months with reruns of the original shows on MTV, merchandise bearing the show's logo and characters, recordings, movie activity -- and announcement of the new episodes.
Wolf is producing "Speed Racer" half-hour shows that integrate modern storylines with sophisticated animation, blending familiar characters with new personalities. The cast includes teenage racing driver Speed Racer and his ultimate fantasy racing machine, the Mach-5; his closest friend Sparky, a mechanical whiz; Trixie, Speed's right hand; Pops Racer, his father, the car designer; Racer X, the mysterious masked racer; Spridle, Speed's little brother; and Chim Chim, a mischievous monkey.
"Speed Racer" was the brainchild of Japanese artist Tatsuo Yoshida, who produced the cartoon in 1965; it was adapted into English in the United States, two years later.
