/ Sheer magic! SUPERSTAR ED BLOWS FANS AWAY AT FUSION FESTIVAL.

ED Sheeran last night kicked off a star-studded weekend at this year's Fusion Festival in Cofton Park, more than comfortably stepping into Justin Bieber's sizeable shoes.

After Bieber dropped out, it was the 24-year-old who headlined the first night of a three-day festival and had the 50,000 strong crowds in raptures with his full 90-minute set.

Famed for appearing on stage with nothing more than a guitar and a loop pedal, Sheeran wowed delirious Brummies with renditions aplenty of hits from his '+' and 'x' albums, as well as a number of surprising set list additions, before he heads back to the States next month.

Fresh from performing in front of more than a quarter of a million people at Wembley in the capital last month, Sheeran returned to the Second City for the first time since last November.

He started things off with 'I'm a Mess',' and followed them up with hits 'Lego House', 'The A-Team', ' 'Sing' and 'Drunk.'.

* Penultimate act of the evening was rapper Tinie Tempah, who provided a very engaging set. The London artist kicked off his explosive performance with debut single 'Pass Ou',' which was followed by fellow Disc-Overy singles 'Frisky',' 'Written in the Stars' and 'Till I'm Gone.'.

Manchester-born boyband Rixton preceded Tinie, their number one hit 'Me and My Broken Heart' enthusiastically received. Energetic Botswana-born DJ Fresh was accompanied by Messy MC for his spell on stage, while Fuse ODG, former JLS member Aston Merrygold and X Factor star Luke Friend also performed.

One act who didn't make it onto the stage was singer-songwriter Shift K3y, who tweeted an apology to his fans after he'd been caught up in motorway traffic.

Weather throughout the day did much to raise spirits of the enthusiastic festival-goers; it was Shepherd's Delight by evening, promising much of the same for today's music fans.
