In DE008, Ford Motor Company Statement on 1992 VRA, moved earlier

today, we are advised by Ford that in the fourth paragraph (beginning "We have ...") a sentence was omitted (as originally issued). The revised version follows:
FORD MOTOR COMPANY STATEMENT ON 1992 VRA
DEARBORN, Mich., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement is attributable to Harold A. Poling, chairman and CEO, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F):
This won't do a thing to help the trade balance.
Again, the Japanese have shown that they are not seriously concerned about the chronic trade imbalance with the United States.
We have said that measurable improvement in the trade situation with Japan is needed starting in 1992. A voluntary import limit of around 1.3 million or less would have shown that Japan understood the need to change its trading relationships.
All that has happened is that the Japanese government has proposed a voluntary level for 1992 at about the same volume their auto makers imported into the United States from Japan in 1991. So, where is the reduction?
The trade imbalance between the U.S. and Japan -- up from $41 billion in 1990 to $43 billion in 1991 -- is still the most important problem. The early 1992 figures confirm that Japan did not get the message and is continuing to ship aggressively to the United States and other major trading partners. U.S. trade with other countries has improved significantly. Japan continues to believe it can export to the United States whatever it wants.
