ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING TOPS ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS
/ADVANCE/ WASHINGTON, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The recycling rate for all-aluminum beverage cans reached a record high during 1992, as Americans recycled almost 63 billion cans. It was the 21st consecutive year that the number of cans returned for recycling has increased.
Nearly 68 percent of the 92.4 billion aluminum beverage cans produced in the United States were recycled.
According to The Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, 1992 proved that aluminum beverage cans are solid value and not solid waste.
The record-setting year far exceeds previous records. In 1991, the industry recycled 57 billion aluminum beverage cans. In 1972, when statistics were first tabulated, 1.2 billion cans were returned.
In all, the industry spent approximately $968 million in 1992 to get the aluminum beverage cans back. The money was injected back into local economies to benefit individuals, schools, churches, scout troops and non-profit organizations. The money was also used for state and local municipalities to fund recycling programs.
According to the three associations, most of the 63 billion aluminum cans were returned through the industry's highly developed, market-driven collection infrastructure, which includes 10,000 buy- back centers nationwide. Additionally, used aluminum beverage cans were returned via approximately 4,000 city and county municipal and curbside recycling programs.
Aluminum cans are recycled in a closed-loop process, which saves 95 percent of the energy needed to produce aluminum from ore. Energy savings and capital expenditure avoidance give the can its intrinsic value to the industry, according to the three organizations.
The market for used cans is efficient and competitive. From recycling through reclamation and production, it can take as little as 90 days for an aluminum beverage can to be back in a store, ready for consumer purchase.
