'pounds 10 FREE cashback cost me pounds 90' INVESTIGATE.

Byline: Penman ; Sommerlad

ALWAYS look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if it's an online offer.

John Richards saw a pounds 10 cashback deal after using the Nochex payment site for an online order.

It tempted him to a FREE - in capital letters - trial of Rewards First, as easy as 1-2-3! Wind forward a few months and John has found that six payments of pounds 14.95 have been taken from his card by a third outfit, Credit Rating Matters.

He has asked for his money back, only to be told that he can't have it because he had joined Rewards First, and then "agreed and acknowledged" to take out membership with Credit Rating Matters.

"I'm nearly 70 years of age, why would I need a credit rating check?" he asks.

Rewards First and Credit Rating Matters are both owned by Adaptive Affinity Ltd, which is run by a certain Andrew Millet.

He has got form for this sort of online "offer", as we have revealed with his High Street Max monthly "discount shopping" club that readers seemingly joined but without their knowledgeuntil they spotted the credit card reductions. Millet, whose previous threats to sue us just look like hot air, did not get back to us when we asked about John's predicament.

Nochex were more helpful though, insisting it doesn't pass bank details to third parties.

It said that John would have been transferred to the Rewards First website if he had accepted the FREE cashback offer, and then he should have received a membership confirmation email.

But that email "could have fallen into a spam folder", they added.

The Nochex spokesman said: "I will see if I can get the company to resolve the issue."

Hope he has more luck than us.
