'ZAPATA PROTEIN' IS NEW NAME NATION'S MARINE PROTEIN LEADER

HOUSTON, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Zapata Haynie Corporation, long known as the nation's leading producer of marine protein and oil products from menhaden, has taken the new name of Zapata Protein (USA), Inc. to reflect its expanded mission as an integrated agribusiness company, Zapata Protein Chairman and Chief Executive Officer R.C. Lassiter announced today.
In an announcement marking the opening day of the menhaden fishing season in the Gulf of Mexico, Lassiter said Zapata Protein will focus on enhancing earnings through product differentiation, a continuing emphasis on quality, new product development, and value-added products and services. Zapata Protein is also expanding its Hammond, Louisiana- based protein marketing activities.
"Zapata Protein's goal is to expand beyond its traditional role as the nation's low-cost harvester of menhaden and manufacturer of the highest quality fish meals for poultry, swine, dairy, aquaculture and other livestock nutrition," Lassiter said. "We intend to continue to build Zapata Protein into an international marketer of a variety of protein and oil products through acquisitions, joint ventures and the establishment of new businesses."
Last year, Zapata Protein entered the protein and feed milling business by acquiring controlling interest of Delaware-based Venture Milling Company. Venture Milling is involved in the milling of a variety of protein products and feeds.
"We are reviewing a number of additional acquisition candidates in the protein and feed mill sectors, as well as actively pursuing opportunities to enhance our marketing activities," the Zapata Protein Chairman said.
Concurrent with the company's emphasis on building its marketing activities, Zapata Protein recently streamlined its general administration and technical support functions, moving much of the responsibility from a centralized office back to the plant level, Lassiter said.
"We have moved the key decision-making in these areas back to the point of action where it belongs," he said.
In line with this reorganization, Lassiter announced the promotion of Stephen E. Bradshaw to the newly established position of Executive
Vice President of Zapata Protein (USA), Inc. Bradshaw, who had been

Senior Vice President--Operations, will add overall management of technical services to his responsibilities, which already include operation of the company's five processing plants and its fleet of 48 fishing vessels. Bradshaw, 46, has a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Rice University and an M.B.A. degree from the University of Texas.
The Zapata Protein Chairman said that the company's new business initiatives build on improved financial results during the current fiscal year and the expectation that this performance will continue through the 1994 fishing season.
"We believe there are significant domestic and international opportunities for an integrated agribusiness focused on the production and marketing of dependably high-quality protein ingredients for a variety of livestock feeds -- and we are positioning Zapata Protein to make the most of those opportunities," Lassiter said.
Headquartered in Houston, Zapata Protein operates five menhaden processing plants in Louisiana, Mississippi and Virginia that produce fish meals for use in livestock feeds, fish oil which is sold for human and livestock consumption, and fish solubles, which are used in organic fertilizers, pet foods and
livestock feeds. Zapata Protein's specialty fish meals include Special Select(R), for swine and poultry, and Sea- Lac(R), for dairy cattle.
Zapata Protein is a subsidiary of Houston-based Zapata Corporation (NYSE: ZOS), which is also involved in natural gas services. Lassiter serves as Chairman and CEO of both Zapata Protein and Zapata Corporation.
