'Warrior' Bob will fight for fitness.

I SAT watching Bob Moncur perform a walk on part in the splendid Sunday For Sammy charity show that packed out the City Hall.

Three short days later United's European Fairs Cup-winning skipper was under the surgeon's knife and I know every Magpie will wish this great Magpie ambassador all the luck in the world in what will be a long recovery.

Bob has not, by the way, suffered a return of his original cancer, which is splendid news, but the road ahead is still long and winding.

However, Moncur was the epitome of a Scottish warrior in his playing days so he'll fight the good fight right enough.

In fact he was a Roman centurion in full costume, not a Mel Gibson lookalike, when he walked on stage alongside Glenn McCrory. It was a fun evening with Brendan Foster also striding the boards.

The after-show party was a time to chew the fat with old friends like Auf Weidersehen Pet writer Ian La Frenais, who had flown in from Mumbai to attend, the hysterically funny Brendan Healy who has had his own fight for fitness recently, and Jeff Brown from the Beeb.

However, it was Bob Moncur who held all our thoughts. The man epitomises everything we love about Newcastle United and you cannot get enough of that these hard days!
