'WITHOUT RESERVATIONS' IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY INN ANNIVERSARY

'WITHOUT RESERVATIONS' IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY INN ANNIVERSARY
ATLANTA, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A bear on the loose, a tornado party in the basement, an abandoned baby rescued in the nick of time, a Christmas dollhouse for a child whose mother could not afford one.
All of the above events have one thing in common: all are selections in "Without Reservations," a new book with insiders' views of the never-dull world of the hotel industry.
Edited by Fred Alias, president of Sandcastle Resorts, a hotel development and management company, "Without Reservations" was released today in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the founding of Holiday Inn hotels.
"The idea for such a book had been taking shape for a few years," admitted Alias. "It grew out of hearing so many wonderful stories about the daily events that occur in hotels -- the kind of human experiences that richly add to our own lives. My assistant, Joanne Love, and I used to talk about how interesting it would be to put some of those stories in a book to share with other people, hotel employees as well as guests."
In a discussion with Ray Lewis, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Holiday Inn Worldwide, Alias mentioned his idea, and Lewis endorsed it. "Not only is Holiday Inn the most recognized hotel brand in the world, but almost everyone has stayed in a Holiday Inn at one time or another, making it easy for them to relate to the stories in the book. We felt that such a book would bring back happy memories for many people.
"The timing became important," said Alias, who is the founder and chairman of the board of Sandcastles, Inc., as well as a Holiday Inn franchisee. "We knew we had to work fast to accomplish our goals in time for the 40th anniversary celebration."
Solicitations for material went out in December 1991 to Holiday Inn employees in America as well as the hotel chain's most frequent guests, with a return deadline of Jan. 31, 1992.
"We knew we had a short turn-around time," Alias said, "but the response was extraordinary -- almost 500 submissions, containing some of the most delightful, humorous and moving stories we had ever encountered."
An independent judging company established criteria for judging and then conducted the first selection process, sending 200 of the submissions to Alias and his staff for the final 100 selections.
The book was purposely designed and edited to present the stories in an easy-to-read fashion, according to Alias.
"We wanted everyone to have an enjoyable experience when they read the selections," he emphasized. "And we wanted it to celebrate the hotel industry for its unique service to travelers. I think anyone who reads it will have a great appreciation for the special relationship that exists between guest and hotel."
"Without Reservations" will be available at participating Holiday Inn hotels in North America, as well as select book outlets.
Holiday Inn Worldwide, which is owned by Bass PLC of the U.K., is the world's leading hotel chain, with nearly 1,700 hotels and 330,000 guest rooms in 54 countries and territories around the world.
