'WHEEL OF FORTUNE' AMERICA'S GAME SPINS INTO TENTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY
AS THE NO. 1 SHOW IN TELEVISION SYNDICATION
NEW YORK, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sept. 7, 1992, Merv Griffin's Wheel of Fortune begins the fall broadcast season celebrating its tenth year anniversary as the No. 1 show in television syndication. For this special year, Wheel comes back with three new tournaments, "Soap Opera College Challenge," "My Favorite Teacher Week" and "Superstars of Sports Week;" a fantastic new set, which includes new scenic pieces, music and graphics; and Wheel's host Pat Sajak steps into the anniversary season with a new designer wardrobe. Wheel of Fortune proudly enters this hallmark year with 50 million devoted weekly viewers.
Wheel of Fortune is produced by Merv Griffin Enterprises and is distributed worldwide by King World Productions, Inc.
To kick off its tenth year anniversary season, Wheel of Fortune will take its new set and cast and crew on the road to tape ten exciting shows in San Francisco. On Sept. 11, 12 and 13, Wheel will tape its new "Soap Opera College Challenge" at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. Soap stars participating in this new competition are: Richard Lawson and Jill Larson, "All My Children;" Fiona Hutchison and Frank Dicopoulos, "Guiding Light;" Melody Thomas Scott and Scott Reeves, "The Young and the Restless;" and Melissa Reeves and Michael Sabatino, "Days of Our Lives." These soap stars will be spinning the wheel against college students from the University of Miami, University of Hawaii, New York University and University of San Francisco Medical School.
Wheel of Fortune's "Teen Week" airs Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, and then the show hits the road in October for the taping of another new tournament, "My Favorite Teacher Week." Junior high and high school students, ages 11 to 16, will team up with their favorite teacher for this competition, which will be taped from Philadelphia's Civic Center on Oct. 9, 10 and 11. The game show's third new competition, "Superstars of Sports Week" will feature famous sports figures at the wheel. This special challenge will be broadcast March 1-March 5, 1993.
Always keeping in step with contemporary fashion trends, Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak returns with a new wardrobe from Fred Hayman of Beverly Hills, and Vanna White returns with a new title. While she remains co-host of Wheel, the new Guinness World Book of Records has named Vanna White "television's most frequent clapper." According to Guinness, Vanna claps 720 times per show or 28,080 times per year.
Since its 1983 launch in syndication by King World Productions, Wheel of Fortune has been the No. 1 syndicated program in America and the No. 1 game show in the world. Wheel of Fortune has consistently delivered higher ratings than its competitors for 34 consecutive sweeps periods. Just last season, Wheel achieved unprecedented success by posting its highest ratings in four years. Additionally, the popularity of Wheel has grown to such a phenomenal level that the show has been renewed through 1996.
With over 100 million worldwide fans tuning in weekly, there's no doubt that Wheel of Fortune is the show to lead syndicated television programming into the 21st century.
