'Vikings' Season 5, Episode 20 Review: War Continues.
Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) finally got what was coming to him in the "Vikings" Season 5 finale. The new season began with too many unnecessary characters, but with each new episode, there have been enough deaths to make the remaining characters that much more interesting. Episode 20 featured just one death, but it is being considered one of the best episodes so far.
The following article contains spoilers from "Vikings" Season 5, including the finale episode.
According to (https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2019/01/30/vikings-season-5-finale-review-ragnarok-is-the-seasons-best-episode/#5dc106793a6a) Forbes , some of the necessary deaths in Season 5 were that of Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), characters related to Floki's (Gustaf Skarsgard) storyline in Iceland, Judith (Jennie Jacques) and Aethelred (Darren Cahill). The finale episode featured the death of Freydis (Alicia Agneson). She was killed by Ivar for betraying him and letting the enemy army to march into Kattegat through the secret passageway.
Kattegat has been retaken, but the war will continue. Ivar managed to escape with the help of his loyal supporters. The Seer (John Kavanagh) was back in the finale to warn Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) that the war isn't yet over.
The twist in the episode during the battle that tipped the scales against Ivar was the sudden appearance of Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick). The end of the war meant that Bjorn was crowned as the new king, but that also came with a warning from his father Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) to be careful with the thirst for power.
Why does Bjorn want to rule Kattegat while he could have lived a comfortable life in Wessex? "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst answered that question in an interview with (https://variety.com/2019/tv/features/vikings-season-5-finale-interview-1203119650/) Variety . Hirst explained that Kattegat is the spiritual home that every Viking goes back to. He recalled a scene between Ragnar and Bjorn in which the former wasn't keen on being the ruler while the latter felt that he could do a much better job. Now, Bjorn finally has his chance.
The fans will find out just how good a ruler Bjorn is in Season 6. Hirst confirmed that Bjorn is better than Ivar because he is more generous and has good intentions. However, the show creator pointed out that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The new king of Kattegat will be tested with the questions and choices that he has never faced before. One wrong move will have "very bad" consequences.
The one character who was missing in the "Vikings" Season 5 finale was Floki. Hirst hasn't confirmed that the character is dead. In an interview with (https://www.tvguide.com/news/vikings-season-5-episode-20-recap/) TV Guide the show creator teased that Ubbe will be deeply affected by tales of Floki, and in Season 6, Ubbe will be obsessed with finding this mythic land.
