'Things can go wrong in the blink of an eye'.

Coronation Street star Samia Ghadie was so moved by St John Ambulance's advert, she signed up for a first aid course. Samia, mum to Freya, three, says: As a mum myself, seeing how something as normal as a little boy playing in the garden can turn into something drastically wrong made me realise that if that happened to me, I wouldn't have a clue what to do.

I know the recovery position and the real basics but other than that I would be at a loss. Now I want to do the course as soon as possible.

Things can so easily happen with children and you don't even want to think about it, but it is being responsible to know what to do.

When Freya was 11 weeks old I was giving her some gripe water and she choked. I didn't know what to do. I went into such a panic and called an ambulance. They took her to hospital and she was fine when we got there, but if I was prepared I would have been able to deal with it on my own.

Another time I was out walking my dog and saw an older man coming towards me having a heart attack. I rang the ambulance but I didn't have a clue what to do with regards to heart massage or resuscitation. Luckily another passer-by did know first aid and he actually saved his life. The man went to hospital and was fine, thanks to the man on the street who had some training. I just felt helpless as I didn't know what to do.

You don't think something like that is ever going to happen to you, but if it does, I want to make sure I know what I'm doing. I've booked myself on a course and I can't wait.

I did a St John Ambulance course at school but I've forgotten it all. It will be good to refresh my memory.
