'TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY? 'YES AND NO' SAY STRESSED-OUT AMERICANS

 BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- There's no doubt about it -- visiting friends and relatives is America's favorite part of the season, according to a newly released Winter Holiday Survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for Hilton Hotels.
 However, all the holiday hubbub does take its toll: Americans are more stressed out now than at any other time of the year, and nearly half feel like they need a vacation by the time January rolls around.
 According to Hilton's survey, 60 percent of women and 49 percent of men find the holiday season the most stressful time of the year.
 "The pressure of tight pocketbooks, tight deadlines and tight quarters can combine during the holidays to shatter the calm of even the most good-natured person," said Dr. John P. Robinson, Ph.D., a noted time stress expert, who analyzed the survey findings for Hilton. "Stress is most acute for people in the middle of those yuppie years,'" he said, "with 65 percent of those age 35-44 reporting the highest holiday stress."
 Time -- or lack thereof -- is the biggest stress inducer. The time crunch is especially tough on women; 36 percent name "not enough time" as their least favorite part of the holidays, compared to 23 percent of men.
 Men, on the other hand, are more likely to complain about that time-consuming task -- shopping for gifts; 31 percent of men vs. 19 percent of women name shopping as their least favorite part of the holidays.
 And while it just wouldn't be the holidays without visiting family and friends, this activity, too, has its downsides -- especially when it comes to overnight visits.
 From the host's viewpoint, the worst part of having overnight guests is cleaning up after them. Men and women both agree on this score, but women, not surprisingly, feel more strongly about it than men (32 percent of women vs. 25 percent of men listed it as their least enjoyable part of hosting overnight guests.)
 Guests, on the other hand, have two chief complaints: "not having enough privacy" (34 percent) and "uncomfortable beds" (21 percent). This might explain why nearly a third of America (28 percent) would rather stay at a hotel than someone's home during the holidays. The best part of staying at a hotel, survey respondents say, is "having time for yourself" (43 percent).
 Apparently, finding some stress-free time alone is just as alluring to people after the holidays as it is during all the hoopla. Nearly half of Hilton's survey respondents (43 percent) said they feel like they need a vacation after the holidays.

 To help America beat the post-holiday blues, Hilton is extending its WinterSaver promotion for stays through Feb. 14.
 WinterSaver rates start at only $52 per room, per night and are available seven days a week with a three-night minimum stay requirement. No advance purchase is required. The promotion applies to single or double occupancy rooms and includes Hilton's Family Plan (children of any age stay free in their parents' or grandparents' room). WinterSaver rates are subject to availability, are not available to groups, and require a one-night deposit (refundable if canceled 72 hours prior to arrival). WinterSaver rates are not available on Dec. 31 or during blackout dates. For reservations, call your professional travel agent or 800-HILTONS.
