'THE SECRET GARDEN' BEGINS PRODUCTION IN ENGLAND FOR WARNER BROS.
BURBANK, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal photography has begun in England on an all-new feature film of the much-loved classic children's story, "The Secret Garden," it was announced today by Bruce Berman, Warner Bros. president of Worldwide Theatrical Production.
Warner Bros. and American Zoetrope are collaborating on the picture, which is executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and Fred Fuchs of American Zoetrope and produced by Fred Roos and Tom Luddy. Agnieszka Holland, whose acclaimed "Europa, Europa" was nominated for an Academy Award last year, directs.
"The Secret Garden" tells the story of a lonely, angry young orphan girl who is brought to Yorkshire to live in her reclusive uncle's huge and forbidding home. She gradually builds a friendship with a kind rural boy who has an extraordinary bond with animals, and with her spoiled, bedridden cousin, whose mother died in a mysterious accident.
The three children discover a hidden walled garden that has suffered from long neglect. As they work to restore the mysterious garden to its former glory, the garden begins to work its magic on them, bringing love and happiness to their lives.
The screenplay for this filmed version of "The Secret Garden," which returns to the original story to establish its scope and tone, is by Caroline Thompson, whose previous credits include "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Addams Family." Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith stars as the housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, with a cast of children selected after an exhaustive search was conducted on both sides of the Atlantic.
Ten-year-old Kate Maberly, a British television actress, plays the central role of Mary Lennox, with newcomer Haydon Prowse cast as the bedridden Colin Craven and Andrew Knott, also a television veteran, portraying Dickon, the Yorkshire boy who befriends them both. Laura Crossley plays Dickon's sister Mary; both Crossley and Knott have previously appeared in the English cult soap opera, "Coronation Street."
"The Secret Garden" is the latest in a series of versions of Frances Hodgson Burnett's tale to have been brought to the stage and screen, beginning with a film released in 1949. The story was recently adapted into a Broadway musical, and is currently enjoying a popularly and critically praised theatrical run.
Filming is being carried out on location in Yorkshire and at Pinewood Studios outside of London. The distinguished crew behind the camera includes production designer Stuart Craig ("Elephant Man," "The Mission," "Dangerous Liasons"), director of photography Roger Deakins ("Sid and Nancy," "Mountains of the Moon," "Barton Fink") and costume designer Marit Allen ("Little Shop of Horrors," "Mermaids," "White Mischief"). Warner Bros. will distribute "The Secret Garden" worldwide.
