'THE POSTMAN' ('IL POSTINO') HAS ITS BIGGEST WEEK EVER AT THE BOX OFFICE

Film Has Grossed $13.4 Million at U.S. Box Office,
 and Over $40 Million Worldwide

LOS ANGELES, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- As the countdown continues towards the 68th Academy Awards, Miramax Films' Oscar-nominated THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) enjoyed its biggest week ever at the box office for the week of March 1-7.

In that seven-day period, the acclaimed Best Picture nominee grossed $1,071,579 on 311 screens, easily the highest-grossing week since its opening last June. The film's cumulative gross now stands at $13,485,459, making it the second highest-grossing Italian film in U.S. history (the first is "La Dolce Vita," with $18 million). The film has also proven to be a powerhouse in international markets, with a worldwide gross of more than $40 million.

Recently, THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) made history in becoming the first foreign language film in 22 years, and the first Italian film ever, to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The film received five Oscar nominations in all, including Best Actor (the late Massimo Troisi), Best Director (Michael Radford), Best Adapted Screenplay (Anna Pavignano, Michael Radford, Furio Scarpelli, Giacomo Scarpelli and Massimo Troisi), and Best Dramatic Score (Luis Bacalov). The 68th Academy Awards will be presented on March 25.

THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) is also a contender for five British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score and Best Non-English Language Film.

In addition, the London Film Critics' Circle has honored Michael Radford and THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) with the prestigious ALFS Awards for Best British Director and Best Foreign Language Film. In a ceremony at the Savoy Hotel on Friday, March 8, Radford was on hand to accept the award.
