'THE LIVING WILL HANDBOOK' PUBLISHED BY HASTINGS HOUSE
 MAMARONECK, N.Y., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Though the current

bestselling book "Final Exit" makes death and suicide a hot topic, it also raises many unanswered questions about terminally ill patients and the role of physicians. How long should doctors keep terminally ill patients alive? Does the patient have the right to decide his or her own fate? As in the Karen Quinlan and Nancy Cruzan cases, what if the patient is in a coma? Do the patient's wishes prior to going into a coma remain valid after the coma? Can a Living Will direct that treatment be stopped in a patient with AIDS? Can the patient leave the decision of life or death to someone else? Why do laws vary from state to state?
These questions and more are answered in "The Living Will Handbook" by Doctor/Attorney Alan Lieberson, M.D., J.D., of Westport, Conn., (published by Hastings House, $12.95). This comprehensive guide covers every state (with individual forms), the legal/medical reasons everyone needs a Living Will and includes a discussion on how each religion views Living Wills.
On Dec. 1, 1991, the Patient Self-Determination Act became law. It instructs every hospital receiving Medicaid or Medicare funds to advise patients of the right to sign a Living Will or select a proxy. Dr. Lieberson fears that what will happen is a "Miranda" approach. "Health care providers will tell patients their rights, tell them to call a lawyer and walk away. This book provides the important medical and legal information required to make an appropriate decision."
The author serves on the Norwalk Bioethics Committee as a patient advocate and advises clients troubled by the health-care system. An honors graduate at Cornell he attended Yale Medical School. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and later graduated from Bridgeport Law School with honors. Dr. Lieberson writes extensively on medical- legal issues for professionals and lay

people.
