'THE JACKSONS: AN AMERICAN DREAM' ABC-TV MINI-SERIES
TO BE FIRST RELEASE FROM MOTOWN HOME VIDEO
Motown To Release Soundtrack of Jackson Mini-Series
Which Includes Unreleased Live Jackson 5 Performances
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Motown President/Chief Executive Officer Jheryl Busby today announced the formation of Motown Home Video. "The Jacksons: An American Dream," the four-hour mini-series based on the life of the Jackson family, which will air on the ABC Television Network over two nights this November, will be Motown Home Video's first release, in a joint venture with PolyGram Filmed Entertainment under the direction of Michael Kuhn, immediately following the airing of the mini-series.
Motown will also release a 14-song soundtrack album of "The Jacksons: An American Dream" on Sept. 22. "Who's Loving You," an unreleased Jackson 5 song recorded live in Gary, Ind., will hit the streets Sept. 8 as the first single. The album includes unreleased, live and archival Jackson 5 performances, as well as songs inspired by the mini-series from cast members, including Grammy-winners Boyz II Men who appear as street-corner singers.
Busby said, "It is great to be working with Emmy Award-winning producer Suzanne de Passe, who will always be part of the Motown family, on 'The Jacksons: An American Dream.' We are proud to be teamed with PolyGram on this project; they are true visionaries in every sense of the word. Motown's rich history and musical heritage, with legends like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, offers many promising possibilities for future theatrical, network and cable television ventures, which we look forward to developing."
"The Jacksons: An American Dream" is a revealing family portrait that begins with the courtship between Joseph and Katherine Jackson and climaxes with the 1984 Victory Tour. It is a fictionalized version of their life story, which tracks the phenomenal success of the Jackson 5 and has the full support of the entire Jackson family. It is a rags-to-riches story of the first family of music, which has inspired many artists including today's popular kiddie groups.
Emmy Award-winning executive producers Stan Margulies ("Roots") and de Passe ("Lonesome Dove") head the production team, which includes Jermaine Jackson and Margaret Maldonado Jackson. Supervising producer Joyce Eliason ("Small Sacrifices") also wrote the script, which Karen Arthur ("Fall From Grace") is directing.
Angela Bassett, who stars in the upcoming Spike Lee feature "Malcolm X" as Betty Shabazz, wife of Malcolm X, and was recently in the critically acclaimed "Boyz 'N The Hood," portrays Katherine Jackson. Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs, best remembered for his role in "Welcome Back Kotter," plays Joe Jackson. Billy Dee Williams, who rose to fame in "Lady Sings the Blues," appears as Motown Chairman Berry Gordy, Vanessa Williams ("Save the Best For Last") plays de Passe, and Holly Robinson ("21 Jump Street") appears as Diana Ross.
The Jackson 5 are portrayed at three different stages in their lives. A nationwide talent search was conducted by casting director Jaki Brown for youngsters to play the three age groups of the Jackson 5, including Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Randy and Michael. Sisters Rebbie, La Toya and Janet Jackson will also be portrayed in the mini-series.
All rights to the production of "The Jacksons: An American Dream," including video, worldwide television syndication, merchandising and books are being held by Motown Home Video and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.
Stewart Till, president of PFE International, commented: "We believe this is the most exciting mini-series since 'Lonesome Dove,' which not coincidentally, was also produced by Suzanne de Passe. We believe this project will generate the level of worldwide television ratings and video sales that have not been seen since the success of that title. It's a project that will create a huge audience not only in America, but throughout the rest of the world." Regina Dantas at Bossa Productions in New York is representing PolyGram Filmed Entertainment for worldwide television syndication.
A presentation of Motown and PolyGram, "The Jacksons: An American Dream" is a Stan Margulies Co./de Passe Entertainment production in association with KJ Films Inc.
Motown's "The Jacksons: An American Dream" soundtrack album includes live Jackson 5 performances of "Who's Loving You" and "Walk On"/"Stop The Love You Save" from Gary, as well as performances of "I Want You Back" and "ABC" from Los Angeles' Forum. Jermaine Jackson contributes the mini-series-inspired track "The Dream Goes On."
Other tracks include "In The Still Of The Night" from Boyz II Men. Jason Weaver, who portrays Michael in his teens, performs "I Wanna Be Where You Are," "Kansas City," "Twist & Shout," "Dancin' In The Street," and teams with Robinson (Diana Ross) for "Reach Out And Touch." Anthony Harell (young Michael) sings "Climb Every Mountain." Grady Harell (Jackie Wilson) contributes "Baby Work Out."
