'THE FUGITIVE,' 'DEMOLITION MAN' OPT FOR DOLBY'S DIGITAL; DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL TITLES TOP 30 WITH NEW WARNER BROS. RELEASES

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Warner Bros.' "The Fugitive," opening Aug. 6, and "Demolition Man," opening Oct. 8, will be released in Dolby Stereo Digital, lengthening that format's lead as the front- running digital film sound system. The new titles bring to 31 the number of films using Dolby's digital sound-on-film technology since its debut last year.
Among this summer's most anticipated releases, "The Fugitive," based on the 1960s television series, stars Harrison Ford and features Sela Ward and Tommy Lee Jones. "Demolition Man" is a futuristic adventure starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock. Also upcoming in Dolby Stereo Digital from Warner Bros. in July is director Simon Wincer's "Free Willy"; previous Warner Bros. digital releases include "Batman Returns," "The Bodyguard" and "Malcolm X."
"With so many Dolby Stereo digital titles, filmmakers are realizing that digital sound isn't just for special-effects blockbusters," commented Dolby director of marketing and sales, Bill Mead. "Our system has provided an unprecedented sense of 'being there' to period pieces like 'Sommersby' (Warner Bros.), 'Matinee' (Universal City Studios) and 'Posse' (Gramercy Pictures); animated films like 'Aladdin' (Buena Vista); and such contemporary dramas as 'A Far Off Place' (Buena Vista)."
Mead also noted that Dolby Laboratories has an independent, worldwide presence unique in the film industry. "We are the only film sound innovator involved all the way from mixing soundtracks to their playback in the theatre," he said. "That service and support is unequalled in an industry which has seen many formats tied to individual titles or studios come and go."
Dolby Stereo Digital is the latest innovation from Dolby Laboratories, whose film sound technology is featured in more than 19,000 theatres worldwide and has been utilized for more than 4,000 films.
