'THE FIRM' WAS WORKING THIS FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND TO BECOME NO. 1 FILM AT BOX OFFICE

 Achieving Gross of $45.5 Million During First Six Days in Release
 HOLLYWOOD, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- "The Firm," starring Tom Cruise, became the No. 1 film at the box office by grossing $45,554,727 with 2,393 prints in the United States and Canada for a per-print average of $19,036 during the first six days of the film's North American release, it was announced today by Barry London, president of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures. The film's four-day July Fourth weekend gross (July 2-5) is $32,476,785.
 "The Firm" grossed $8,411,266 on Friday (July 2), $10,060,125 on Saturday (July 3), $6,508,382 on Sunday (July 4) and $7,497,012 on Monday (July 5).
 In New York, with 84 prints, the film grossed $2,908,597 for a per- print average of $34,626 during the first six days in release. Contributing to the New York total were the following Manhattan theaters: Astor Plaza with $76,203 and the 84th Street with $88,614.
 In Los Angeles, with 95 prints, "The Firm" grossed $3,758,867 with a per-print average of $39,567 during the first six days. Contributing to the L.A. total were the following theaters: Mann Chinese in Hollywood with $91,541, Mann National in Westwood with $97,258 and the Century City with $81,106.
 In Chicago, with 45 prints, the film grossed $1,499,116 for a per- print six-day average of $33,313. This total includes: Schaumburg with $85,939, and Watertower with $114,817.
 Other top-grossing theaters across the United States and Canada during the six days include: U.A. Plaza, Dallas, with $130,891, Century 21, San Jose with $146,396, and Regency San Francisco with $95,033.
 Tom Cruise stars in "The Firm," a drama based on the John Grisham bestseller. Also starring Gene Hackman, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook and David Straithairn, the film was directed by Sydney Pollack from a screenplay by David Rabe and Robert Towne & David Rayfiel. Scott Rudin, John Davis and Sydney Pollack are the producers and Michael Hausman and Lindsay Doran are the executive producers. The cast includes Wilford Brimley and Gary Busey.
 Cruise stars as Mitch McDeere, an honors graduate of an Ivy League school who forgoes offers at top big city law firms and accepts a position with a small yet wealthy partnership in Memphis, Tenn. The firm leases him a Mercedes, pays off his student loans and arranges a mortgage for his first home. It doesn't take long for Mitch to discover that the firm is not what it appears to be. What seemed like a golden opportunity could cost him his life.
 MPAA-rated R, "The Firm" is presented in Dolby Stereo in selected theaters. The soundtrack album is available on MCA/GRP Cassettes and Compact Discs. Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Paramount Communications Inc.
