'THE FIRM' DOMESTIC GROSS SURPASSES $100 MILLION IN 22 DAYS -- SIXTH-FASTEST FILM OF ALL TIME TO REACH THAT MILESTONE

HOLLYWOOD, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- "The Firm," starring Tom Cruise, achieved a domestic gross surpassing $100 million on Wednesday, July 21, the film's 22nd day in release; becoming the sixth-fastest film of all time to reach that milestone and the second-fastest of all Paramount films, it was announced today by Barry London, president of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures. The film's 22-day gross is $101,201,500.
"What is especially remarkable about the success attained so quickly by `The Firm' is that the R-rated dramatic thriller is attracting audiences in numbers previously the exclusive domain of science fiction and action-adventure movies," said London. "And this is despite a 2 1/2 hour running time that permits less showings of `The Firm' than the quantity accomplished by other films in the marketplace."
"The Firm" opened on Wednesday, June 30, and has been the No. 1 film in the United States and Canada for each of three successive weekends. The only Paramount film to gross $100 million faster is "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." International playdates for "The Firm" begin today in Australia and on Saturday in Japan.
Cruise stars in "The Firm," a drama based on the John Grisham bestseller. Also starring Gene Hackman, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook and David Strathairn, the film was directed by Sydney Pollack from a screenplay by David Rabe and Robert Towne & David Rayfiel. Scott Rudin, John Davis and Pollack are the producers and Michael Hausman and Lindsay Doran are the executive producers. The cast includes Wilford Brimley and Gary Busey.
Cruise stars as Mitch McDeere, an honors graduate of an Ivy League school who forgoes offers at top big city law firms and accepts a position with a small, yet wealthy partnership in Memphis, Tenn. The firm leases him a Mercedes, pays off his student loans and arranges a mortgage for his first home. It doesn't take long for Mitch to discover that the firm is not what it appears to be. What seemed like a golden opportunity could cost him his life.
MPAA-rated R, "The Firm" is presented in Dolby Stereo in selected theaters. The soundtrack album is available on MCA/GRP Cassettes and Compact Discs. Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Paramount Communications Inc.
