'THE ART OF CARTIER' EXHIBITED IN RUSSIA AT THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM IN
ST. PETERSBURG MAY 13 THROUGH JUNE 21, 1992
NEW YORK, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Dignitaries from around the world gathered today in St. Petersburg, Russia for the opening of "The Art of Cartier" exhibition at the world renowned Hermitage museum.
After 85 years Cartier has returned to Russia to exhibit its private collection of masterpieces. These jeweled treasures and objects d'art displayed in the ceremonious Throne Room of the Hermitage provides the latest vivid example of the drastic changes taking place in the former Soviet Union.
"The Art of Cartier" will feature an array of 216 pieces created by Cartier between 1847 and 1955 -- many of which are new Cartier acquisitions.
Founded in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier in Paris, the jeweler quickly established a reputation with the aristocracy and ruling classes at the time. Continuing in that tradition, Cartier became the official purveyor to the Russian court when Tsar Nicholas II bestowed the imperial warrant in 1907.
Visits to Russia greatly influenced Cartier's designs. The jeweler was inspired by the Orientalist motifs of the Tsarist Empire, as well as the geometric shapes and strong pure tints found in the Orthodox art at the Imperial capital. By 1925 this style evolved into Art Deco as we know it today.
In 1914, the outbreak of war put a premature end to Cartier's activities in St. Petersburg. The jewels were destined to remain the only surviving trace of the court's splendor.
In 1989 at the Petit Palais in Paris, Cartier exhibited for the first time its collection of antique pieces. More than 200,000 people viewed the unique works of this master jeweler.
Today, Cartier pays homage, in the setting of the Hermitage to one of its most important sources of inspiration, which was responsible for many of its most beautiful works of art.
